Luke Boswell - 2006 Winner of the  the Individual Under 12  B section at CHESSA Nationals

How he got started:
 
In April 2003 a school friend of Luke’s, Nicholas Brink, suggested he join the extra mural school chess class on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s. After attending two of these sessions at the end of term he was hooked. Seeing his keen interest in the game, I taught Luke more about the game and played against him during the school holiday.
 
Once back at school he continued attending the extra mural chess class for the remainder of 2003.
 
2003 Achievements:
 
Ø      Most Improved Player of the Year award at school.
 
Luke’s development in 2004:
 
Luke was invited to play in the Chess Trials for Nationals in June 2004. He competed and won ALL of his games (5 out of 5) and was chosen for the National U10 B Team. In July 2004, Luke joined ‘CHESSA’ and the ‘Gauteng South Chess Club’.
 
2004 Achievements:
 
Ø      Best Junior Player of the Year award at school.
Ø      Junior Chess Captain of the school team.
Ø      Won 3 out of 5 games at Nationals for the team event.
Ø      Won 5.5 out of 9 games at Nationals for the individual event.
 
Luke’s Achievements in 2005:
 
Ø      Best Senior Player of the Year award at school.
Ø      Senior Chess Captain of the school team.
Ø      Attended most of the provincial and inter-provincial tournaments and achieved board 6 over the year.
Ø      Luke was chosen for Nationals, but was unable to attend.
 
 
 
 
Luke’s Achievements in 2006:
 
Ø      Invited by Mr Pearson for private chess lessons.
Ø      Winner of the Inter-school ‘B’ League.
Ø      Best Senior Player of the Year award at school.
Ø      Senior Chess Captain of the school team.
Ø      3rd place in the first trials for Nationals.
Ø      5th place in the second trials for Nationals.
Ø      6th place in the third & final trials for Nationals.
Ø      Again attended most of the provincial and inter-provincial tournaments and achieved:
o       3 out of 3 in Vereeniging,
o       2 out of 3 in Nelspruit (Sabie)
o       2.5 out of 3 in Houghton (Jhb)
Ø      Won 4 out of 7 games at Nationals for the team event.
Ø      Won 7 out of 7 games (1st place) at Nationals for the individual event.
Ø      Luke has been invited as a “wild card” to play in the Closed S.A. Championships to be held in March/April 2007.
